Southeast Louisiana Council as an Authorized Provider

What is this?

This is a wilderness preparedness course designed for outdoorsmen, those participating in any high-adventure activity or any situation when emergency care is delayed such as a post-storm or post-disaster event. This course takes “Wilderness First Aid Basics” to a new level, increasing the chance for survival following any delayed-care incident.

Can I take this course?

Prerequisites to the course include a minimum age of 14, current adult CPR/AED certification (this course is not for CPR/AED certification) and the physical ability to participate in all activities. This course will include 16 hours of classroom and hands-on scenarios based on actual situations. Your certification will be valid for 2 years. Often times, an American Red Cross “challenge” will be offered for CPR/FA/AED renewal at a discounted rate. Please inquire at the time of registration.

Why should I take this course?

The original “Wilderness First Aid Basics” was developed by the Transylvania County Chapter of the American Red Cross in Brevard, NC in cooperation with, among others, the Boy Scouts of America. This new course and similar courses are now essential training for Philmont, Northern Tier, Sea Base, Swamp Base and The Summit participants. It is also ideal training for the camper, outdoorsman or anyone who may find themselves in a delayed-response situation.

Okay, I’m in. What’s next?

Because of the complexity of the course, the size of this class is strictly limited. If you are interested, you must pre-register by e-mailing your name, address, BSA Pack/Troop/Crew number and age, at the time of the course, to Barry Donewar ( The discounted course tuition (available to BSA leaders and Scouts) is $95.00 per person and includes textbooks, supplies, Red Cross certification card and a custom patch for your uniform (any late registrants pay $110.00).

I can’t make this one. Is there another course scheduled?

This course will be offered as requested by our Council and neighboring Council members. Would your Scouting unit or organization want to host a training class? Simply e-mail your information for the next opportunity to participate in Wilderness and Remote First Aid.
