Is your unit ready?

Why should you care?

Parents seek out information in different ways than they did a decade or more ago. We tend to go first to the computer to gather information about programs we want to consider for ourselves and our families. To be sure that Boy Scouting continues for the next 100 years, we have to recognize change is inevitable, and move to keep pace with that change. BeAScout puts scouting out where parents.

BeAScout is a program sponsored by the BSA to support your unit and the boys and their families that want to join. It is essential that the most up to date information be posted on “your unit’s goggle pin” in order for the system to be of any benefit. If the information becomes out of date or inaccurate, parents may become discouraged and those boys may end up not participating in Scouting.

Complete details about the unit leader's role in Pin Management are explained in the webinar presentation.  This presentation is posted on Scouting.org on the Volunteer tab. Choose BeAScout Webinar Presentation in the Quick Links along the right side menu.

Unit Leader's Role: How to populate the pin

Unit leaders have a very important task. We want them to populate their unit pin so that useful information shows up on the Google map. Please try and get your pin populated before July 23rd when BeAScout goes live nation wide.

So how does a unit leader place information about their unit on the Google pin?

Initially, the unit leaders who can access BeAScout to set up the pin are:

·         cubmaster,

·         scoutmaster

·         crew advisor

·         unit committee chairperson

·         chartered organization representative.

You will log into MyScouting and select BeAScout from the Unit Tools section on the left. There are two options:

Unit Pin Management: Unit Leaders use this to edit pin information.

Unit Lead Management: Unit Leaders use this to manage incoming requests for information from parents interested in Scouting.

The unit leader should first complete the Unit Pin Management screen. They will notice two important items on this view.

  • At the bottom right in the box outlined in red is a preview of the Google pin. This is what the parent will see.
  • At the bottom left is the "Fields Displayed on Goggle Pin" area. The Pin preview box will only display the information that the unit leader selects in this box.

Also, from within Unit Pin Management, there is a Help icon that opens Help files to explain the various parts of the screen.

Pelican Roundtable - We will continue with our monthly roundtables September 2, 2010 at St Catherine of Sienna.  Please look out for possible new monthly date and location for this meeting, and all others to follow.

We are looking for a night that will work best for all units. Please let us know if Thursday night is not a good night for you, and include what night will be best for your leaders. Roundtable is a very important training each month. Come and fellowship with your fellow Scouters.

OA Pelican Chapter Message
To ALL members of Pelican ---
Well, it won't be long before Spring Ordeal Weekend, April 30, May 1 and 2 and we will have new Arrowmen for Order of the Arrow. I, Denis (Whiff) Weiffenbach, am your Pelican Chapter Adult Adviser and invite ALL Scoutmasters to contact myself or your Chapter Chief Jonathan Cranfield to set up a Troop Election. I have heard from a few persons that "OA doesn't do anything." I challenge those persons who might feel that way to get involved and when you do YOU WILL SEE and experience some of the very BEST parts of Scouting. I, personally, have had more FUN and Fellowship through Order of the Arrow than at any time I have been in Scouting. So, GET INVOLVED!!! IT'S GREAT!!! Scouts must be First Class and Voted in by their Troop but Adults, even Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters can be voted in, also. --- So, contact us soon as we need to have the paperwork from Elections 30 days before Ordeal Weekend -- April 30 through May 2. -- Mr. Whiff ------- Be the best of the Best -- In Cheerful Service -- Join Order of the Arrow Pelican Chapter
---- So, contact our Pelican Chapter Chief (Chief Cranfield) at crusader2way@aol.com or Mr. Whiff at whispernwind@cox.net. ...........................
