Boy Scouts of America 2010 Celebrate Scouting Stamp

Celebrate Scouting with the Boy Scouts of America and the United States Postal Service!

In 2010, the year of our 100th Anniversary, the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) will receive an incredible honor from the United States Postal Service (USPS) in the form of a "Celebrate Scouting" stamp. A tribute to the impact of a century of Scouting on the American landscape, the stamp will become widely available during the summer of 2010.

Since 1910, Scouting has served young people and their families through a program of values-based leadership and character. Continuing the BSA's long tradition of service and good turns, we will bring deeper purpose to the Celebrate Scouting stamp by sending letters and care packages to the military men and women serving our country overseas. Also included in this effort are the many veterans who have honorably served our country throughout the years. Join us in the effort!

You can start today by visiting the USPS Web site, where you will find important guidelines and information for keeping in touch with our troops overseas. And, you'll find a toolkit of information to support your efforts, below!

Scouts, BSA staff, volunteers — or anyone who'd like to join our effort — are invited to explore the following resources. There are an array of tools to help you develop a thoughtful letter or care package that reminds our troops how much we appreciate and value their service.

Starting immediately after its debut Jan. 1-3 at the Tournament of Roses festivities in Pasadena, Calif., this 18-wheeler hauling a fascinating interactive exhibit will hit the road to more than 40 destinations throughout the continental United States. Millions of families like yours can connect with the breadth of the Scouting experience.

What will you see and do? Plenty. And you won’t miss the mammoth truck if you spot it on the highway. You’ll recognize it by the scenes of Scouts in action, as well as by the anniversary logo and legend writ large on the side: “100 Years of Scouting: Celebrating the Adventure, Continuing the Journey.”

Don’t miss the virtual Adventure Base 100 tour, either. Keep up with all developments and find out where you can see this motor-vating exhibit in your area at the BSA’s 100th anniversary Web site: www.scouting.org/100 years.

100th Anniversary Hall of Leadership

THE DEADLINE HAS BEE EXTENDED FOR THIS SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY!! NOMINATIONS MAY BE SUBMITTED BY APRIL 2 TO BE CONSIDERED!! Time is running out for volunteers to recognize an inspirational leader or youth they felt has made a lasting impact on them through Scouting. The 100th Anniversary National Hall of Leadership is an opportunity for anyone to recognize outstanding leadership by a Scout, registered leader, or Scouting volunteer who made a significant difference in the life of another by the extraordinary service they have given and the Scouting virtues they have modeled.

The value and relevancy of Scouting comes to life in leadership demonstrated by Scouts and Scouters. Nominations to the National Hall of Leadership are real-life stories from individuals in our council who have been the recipients of extraordinary examples of leadership by our Scouts and Scouters.

To nominate an individual, please go to the following link, and enter your nomination on-line: http://ww2.scouting.org/100years/100years/NationalHallofLeadership.aspx

Virtually anyone associated with Scouting has met someone special who has inspired them or helped them to be a better leader, parent, student, or person by virtue of having met or worked with them in Scouting. Please take the time to nominate the person who has most inspired you in Scouting by their example. Nominees must be living and have to have been registered in Scouting for at least one year, but do not necessarily have to be currently registered.

Generations Connection

Your pictures are wanted!

So many of us have family histories of multi-generational scouting. The council would like to highlight as many as possible. From October 1st through December 31st of this year one of our new display cabinets will be dedicated to groupings of pictures that show family scouting through 2 or more generations. The pictures can be one with multi-generations, or can be a grouping of 2-5 pictures showing scouting in your family through the generations. All pictures should be no larger that 8x10 and should be labeled on the front as to the family and the years the scouts or Scouters were in scouting. On the back please label your contact information so we can be sure the pictures al get back to their rightful owners when we change out the cabinet in January. We would love to fill the cabinet with yours and others family scouting histories in scouting.

While you are at it, be sure to find your way to the 100th anniversary website where you can download the Scouting generational tree and submit a story about how scouting has been an important part of your family. After submitting your story, the website will produce a certificate confirming your family as a generational scouting family. For families that you or your son is the first scouting member, the same website will produce a certificate announcing you/he as a founding member of the future scouting generational family.

There are still 2 spots available - contact Council Services for more info.)

Plans for dinner: 2010 Jamboree theme nights outlined

Dinners at the jamboree have always been tasty, but they're about to get a whole lot better. Bring on the theme nights!

At the 2010 National Scout Jamboree next year, organizers have planned eight different theme nights for participating troops. The themes are:

  • July 26: Western
  • July 27: Tex-Mex
  • July 28: Mardi Gras
  • July 29: Iron Chef (patrols will create a dinner from secret ingredients)
  • July 30: All-American
  • July 31: Arena show (patrols will carry no-cook meals to the arena)
  • Aug. 1: Asian
  • Aug. 2: Dinner Impossible (adults cook for the Scouts)
  • Aug. 3: Chicago

It's clear that boys and adult volunteers won't go hungry at this year's jamboree.

The council still has 3 slots open for qualified Scouts to attend the 2010 National Jamboree. For more information about how your son can attend this once in a lifetime experience. Contact John Olynick at the council office.

Stay connected at the Jamboree

You already k, now that the 2010 National Scout Jamboree will be the best, most exciting, fun-filled, and safest jamboree ever. But now there's another superlative to add to the mix: "most connected."

Thanks to a unique partnership with AT&T, the site at Fort A.P. Hill, Va., which in the past has had spotty wireless coverage, will become a hub of communication for the 45,000 participants and staff and more than 250,000 visitors expected to attend.

We have been told, "If 45,000 Scouts and Scouters all press send on their phones at the same time, their messages will go through."

Instead of the long banks of payphones you might remember from past jamborees, the 2010 jamboree will feature AT&T kiosks at which you can recharge cell phones of any brand. Don't have a cell phone? No problem. AT&T will also have tethered phones b, oys and adults can use to call home for free.

Can't go 10 days without checking your e-mail? Wi-Fi hotspots will support your smartphone or laptop computer, and a computer bank will be available for adult leaders to use in 10-minute blocks of time.

Catholic Committee On Scouting

HOW DO I EARN A CUB SCOUT RELIGIOUS EMBLEM?

1- find the emblem appropriate for your age

  • Tigers should use the “Guardian Angel”  - (available from your local Catholic Committee representative or  sfguidry@prodigy.net     (an e-version is available)
  • Wolves use “light of Christ” – available from the Scout Shop
  • Bears & Webelos use “Parvuli Dei” available from the Scout Shop

2- Purchase the book and fill it out with the help of parents and leaders

3- Double check that all the work is complete

Please don’t force your leader to deny acceptance of this book because the child or the parent forgot to fill in a section.

4- double check that aLl signatures are in the correct places  Many times the parent forgets to sign and forgets to have the scout, his guardian or the pastor  sign and the application must be returned

5- For the “Light of Christ “ and Parvuli Dei”, make an appointment with the pastor or assistant for a short interview so the boys can show him what they have done and to get his signature on the application. Remind the pastor that this is a vocation opportunity.

6- contact the catholic Committee on Scouting for processing Although an application will not be rejected if it is filed alone; it is much PREFFERED if a pack files for the emblems as a group. One person should collect all books, check for completion and signatures. It is preferred if the pack or charter organization could pay for the awards; but we know that this is not always possible. Please collect payment and send ONE PACK CHECK rather than many individual one; made payable to Catholic Committee on Scouting

Emblems can be processed through the mail or at the front door. PLEASE MAKE CONTACT 2-3 WEEKS BEFORE YOU ACTUALLY NEED THE MEDALS, PARICULARLY IN FEBRUARY THRU MAY WHEN DEMAND IS HIGHEST.

COST OF MEDALS  - NATIONALY  PRICES HAVE GONE UP BUT THROUGH THE ENDOWMENT OF DEACON ED HOOPER OUR PRICES WILL EMAIN THE SAME FOR at least the next year. GUARDIAN ANGEL - $3.50 for medal & certificate

RECOGNITION

1- we recommend the KNOT be presented at a pack meeting as soon as the book is completed.

2- the medal may be presented by the pastor at a religious service or scout mass or they may choose the option of having the medals presented to them at the Annual scout mass in May

3- All scouts receiving religious awards between May1st and April 15th of the following year are invited to the Annual Scout mass held on the first week-end of May where they will be recognized by the presiding bishop and the Catholic Committee .

Addendum – March 7, 2007

The Catholic committee on Scouting for the Archdiocese of New Orleans is pleased to announce that an endowment has been made through the last will and testament of Deacon Ed Hooper to help pay for Scout Emblems. Although we cannot pay for all emblems, the decision has been made to pay the cost of any emblem presented at the annual Scout Mass in May. Until further notice, Scouts of any rank may be presented their emblem at the Archdiocesan Mass at no cost to the scout or his unit.

Scouts receiving their emblems in their own home parishes must continue to pay for their medals.

Jewish Committee on Scouting

2010 Scout Shabbat Announced
February 20 event at Congregation Beth Israel

Plans for the first New Orleans area Scout Shabbat to be held in several years were announced by Alan Smason, Jewish Committee Chair for the Southeast Louisiana Council. The event to be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 20 at Congregation Beth Israel celebrates the program of the Boy Scouts of America and its values. It is designed to bring Jewish youth and adult leaders into a setting where they may worship together.

“This year’s event is especially significant because it is the centennial year of Scouting,” explained Smason. “The last time we held a Scout Shabbat service at Congregation Beth Israel was in 1999 when the synagogue was still located in Lakeview and Rabbi Jonathan Glass was there.”

Destroyed after Hurricane Katrina, the synagogue has since relocated into facilities at Gates of Prayer Synagogue, 4000 West Esplanade Avenue in Metairie. It is in the process of a capital campaign for rebuilding a new sanctuary to be located adjacent to the Gates of Prayer property.

Rabbi Uri Topolosky, himself a Jewish Eagle Scout, will help lead a short service to which all past and present area Jewish Scouts or adult leaders are invited. “Because this is the 100th anniversary of Scouting, we want to make sure that everyone who has ever benefited from the program will have a chance to attend,” Smason said.

Anyone who wishes to take part in the service can contact Smason at 504-865-1248 or e-mail at asmason@bellsouth.net. All Scouts and adult leaders are encouraged to wear their uniforms. Scouts will earn special Scout Shabbat patches and a Kiddush luncheon will follow the program.

Like other religious relationships committees, the local Jewish Committee on Scouting promotes Scouting values and encourages Scouts to earn religious emblems as part of their regular activities. The National Jewish Committee on Scouting, part of the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America, bestows age-appropriate emblems to youth and awards adult leaders who promote Jewish Scouting.

Youth Protection Training

Scouting is all about helping young people lead productive, value driven lives. However, the most important t, hing we do as adult leaders is not to teach them to tie a knot or shoot a bow and arrow. The most important thing we do is making sure while they are doing scouting they remain safe. Safe from injury, safe from serious accident, and yes safe from others who presence we need to protect our children from. Scouting for many years as offered Youth Protection Training to all adult leaders as well as parents and others who find themselves in leadership roles with these precious young people. A new version of Youth Protection Training is available on line at our Council website ( www.bsa-selacouncil.org ) and can be found by going to the training tab and creating a MyScouting account. If you have never completed the training, make a commitment to get in completed this month. If it’s been over a year since you last took the training, it might be well to go through it a, gain as a refresher. While completing of the course should automatically, update your training record, some web browsers are not as compatible with the training as others. We recommend that whenever you complete an online training course that you shoot an email to sela@bsamail.org, indicating your name, unit, number and the, course that you completed so we can make sure your training record is up to date.

February 4th – Super Roundtable at 7:00 p.m. at St. Catherine Sienna, Bonnabel & Metairie Road. Our next roundtable meeting will be held Thursday, February 4th at St. Catherine of Sienna in the cafeteria. This super roundtable will be for Fleur de Lis and Pelican districts in an effort to improve roundtable attendance. The roundtable is for all Cub, Boy Scout, Venture, & Exploring leaders. The meeting will start at 7:00 p.m.

The February Roundtable will be our Scouting for Food Kickoff. Please have a representative in attendance that will pick up the Scouting for Food bags, and be able to plot on a map the area your unit will cover during Scouting for Food. We need to make sure that units close in proximity do not distribute bags to the same neighborhoods.

Also, we are looking for a night that will work best for all units. Please let us know if Thursday night is not a good night for you, and include what night will be best for your leaders. Roundtable is a very important training each month. Come and and fellowship with your fellow Scouters.

THE FAMILY FUN OF SCOUTING

ENTHUSIASM, COMMITMENT, GREAT REWARDS

MAKE IT SO!

ScoutParents is part of Scouting’s National Parenting Imitative.  It is specially designed for parents, guardians, grandparents, extended family and all those who are involved with our Scouts and all other interested adults who want to learn about Scouting. It is the ideal introduction for those new to Scouting.

ScoutParents is the vision of lifelong Scouter Gerald I. Lawhorn, from Georgia. On the website, it says that Gerald believes “all parents of Scouts should be asked to volunteer and make it known that they desire to participate, help, and enjoy Scouting with their child. Those that choose to will be the ones who become ScoutParents or other volunteers.” One of Gerald’s quotes: “Scouts of “drop off” parents generally drop out!”

The intent of the initiative is to provide parents with information and tools to help them understand their importance in becoming more involved with their Scouts. In turn, we hope that Scouts will stay with the program longer and have a better experience, hopefully working their way to the Eagle Scout rank.

Look at the website and think of some new ways to involve the parents of your Scouts in your unit activities and include them in your planning for future events.
