Boy Scouts of America 2010 Celebrate Scouting Stamp

Celebrate Scouting with the Boy Scouts of America and the United States Postal Service!

In 2010, the year of our 100th Anniversary, the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) will receive an incredible honor from the United States Postal Service (USPS) in the form of a "Celebrate Scouting" stamp. A tribute to the impact of a century of Scouting on the American landscape, the stamp will become widely available during the summer of 2010.

Since 1910, Scouting has served young people and their families through a program of values-based leadership and character. Continuing the BSA's long tradition of service and good turns, we will bring deeper purpose to the Celebrate Scouting stamp by sending letters and care packages to the military men and women serving our country overseas. Also included in this effort are the many veterans who have honorably served our country throughout the years. Join us in the effort!

You can start today by visiting the USPS Web site, where you will find important guidelines and information for keeping in touch with our troops overseas. And, you'll find a toolkit of information to support your efforts, below!

Scouts, BSA staff, volunteers — or anyone who'd like to join our effort — are invited to explore the following resources. There are an array of tools to help you develop a thoughtful letter or care package that reminds our troops how much we appreciate and value their service.

WHAT CAN YOUR UNIT DO?

BSA 100th Anniversary Tree PLANTING IN JEFFERSON pARISH!
wE NEED UNIFORMED VOLUNTEERS AT THIS EVENT!
mEDIA HAS BEEN INVITED SO WE NEED A STRONG PRESENCE!

The tree is an important symbol of the family—a family tree, the life of a tree that spans generations, the belief that a tree will continue to provide, long after we're gone.

Because of that symbolism—and a shared mission for service and environmental stewardship—we could think of no better Generations Connection partner than the 11 Parishes right here in southeast Louisiana. We will be planting a 100th Anniversary Tree in all 11 Parishes. The first tree will be planted at Lafraniere Park on January 14, 2010. The program will begin at 10:00 am.

We would like to have a strong Scouting presence at this centennial event. We are inviting all Scouts and leaders to attend. The program should last about 30 minutes. If you or your Scouts (we know this is a school day) are able to attend please let Nancy Allen or Shane Cooley know as soon as possible at sela@bsamail.org.

Keep on Truckin'

Shift your celebration of the BSA’s 100th anniversary into overdrive with a visit to “Adventure Base 100” when it rumbles to a location near you during 2010.

Starting immediately after its debut Jan. 1-3 at the Tournament of Roses festivities in Pasadena, Calif., this 18-wheeler hauling a fascinating interactive exhibit will hit the road to more than 40 destinations throughout the continental United States. Millions of families like yours can connect with the breadth of the Scouting experience.

What will you see and do? Plenty. And you won’t miss the mammoth truck if you spot it on the highway. You’ll recognize it by the scenes of Scouts in action, as well as by the anniversary logo and legend writ large on the side: “100 Years of Scouting: Celebrating the Adventure, Continuing the Journey.”

Don’t miss the virtual Adventure Base 100 tour, either. Keep up with all developments and find out where you can see this motor-vating exhibit in your area at the BSA’s 100th anniversary Web site: www.scouting.org/100 years.

STRUCTURES AND ACTIVITIES

Go Scouting Dome—surround-sound, surround-vision immersion chamber that features a multitude of typical Scouting environments.

Ropes Course and Zip Line—exciting, outdoor fun.

Green Screen—picture yourself doing cool Scouting activities.

100th Anniversary Hall of Leadership

Time is running out for volunteers to recognize an inspirational leader or youth they felt has made a lasting impact on them through Scouting. The 100th Anniversary National Hall of Leadership is an opportunity for anyone to recognize outstanding leadership by a Scout, registered leader, or Scouting volunteer who made a significant difference in the life of another by the extraordinary service they have given and the Scouting virtues they have modeled.

The value and relevancy of Scouting comes to life in leadership demonstrated by Scouts and Scouters. Nominations to the National Hall of Leadership are real-life stories from individuals in our council who have been the recipients of extraordinary examples of leadership by our Scouts and Scouters.

To nominate an individual, please go to the following link, and enter your nomination on-line: http://ww2.scouting.org/100years/100years/NationalHallofLeadership.aspx

Virtually anyone associated with Scouting has met someone special who has inspired them or helped them to be a better leader, parent, student, or person by virtue of having met or worked with them in Scouting. Please take the time to nominate the person who has most inspired you in Scouting by their example. Nominees must be living and have to have been registered in Scouting for at least one year, but do not necessarily have to be currently registered. Selection for the Hall of Leadership will take place during the month of February and will be announced at the end of February. Don’t miss out on this once in a lifetime opportunity to recognize someone special!

Generations Connection

Your pictures are wanted!

So many of us have family histories of multi-generational scouting. The council would like to highlight as many as possible. From October 1st through December 31st of this year one of our new display cabinets will be dedicated to groupings of pictures that show family scouting through 2 or more generations. The pictures can be one with multi-generations, or can be a grouping of 2-5 pictures showing scouting in your family through the generations. All pictures should be no larger that 8x10 and should be labeled on the front as to the family and the years the scouts or Scouters were in scouting. On the back please label your contact information so we can be sure the pictures al get back to their rightful owners when we change out the cabinet in January. We would love to fill the cabinet with yours and others family scouting histories in scouting.

While you are at it, be sure to find your way to the 100th anniversary website where you can download the Scouting generational tree and submit a story about how scouting has been an important part of your family. After submitting your story, the website will produce a certificate confirming your family as a generational scouting family. For families that you or your son is the first scouting member, the same website will produce a certificate announcing you/he as a founding member of the future scouting generational family.

Pack Planning Resources

As you gear up for another great season of Cub Scouting, here are some of the basic documents you’ll need to run your Cub Scout pack smoothly. We’ve scanned all of our Cub Scouting resources looking for the most pertinent items, then added some notes of our own. You can quickly see what these documents contain without having to open each one.

Note that these are Adobe Portable Document files (.PDF), which you can print directly. Go to : http://scouting.org/sitecore/content/Home/CubScouts/Leaders/PackPlanningResources.aspx

(There are still 3 spots available - contact Council Services for more info.)

Plans for dinner: 2010 Jamboree theme nights outlined

Dinners at the jamboree have always been tasty, but they're about to get a whole lot better. Bring on the theme nights!

At the 2010 National Scout Jamboree next year, organizers have planned eight different theme nights for participating troops. The themes are:

  • July 26: Western
  • July 27: Tex-Mex
  • July 28: Mardi Gras
  • July 29: Iron Chef (patrols will create a dinner from secret ingredients)
  • July 30: All-American
  • July 31: Arena show (patrols will carry no-cook meals to the arena)
  • Aug. 1: Asian
  • Aug. 2: Dinner Impossible (adults cook for the Scouts)
  • Aug. 3: Chicago

It's clear that boys and adult volunteers won't go hungry at this year's jamboree.

The council still has 3 slots open for qualified Scouts to attend the 2010 National Jamboree. For more information about how your son can attend this once in a lifetime experience. Contact John Olynick at the council office.

Stay connected at the Jamboree

You already know that the 2010 National Scout Jamboree will be the best, most exciting, fun-filled, and safest jamboree ever. But now there's another superlative to add to the mix: "most connected."

Thanks to a unique partnership with AT&T, the site at Fort A.P. Hill, Va., which in the past has had spotty wireless coverage, will become a hub of communication for the 45,000 participants and staff and more than 250,000 visitors expected to attend.

We have been told, "If 45,000 Scouts and Scouters all press send on their phones at the same time, their messages will go through."

Instead of the long banks of payphones you might remember from past jamborees, the 2010 jamboree will feature AT&T kiosks at which you can recharge cell phones of any brand. Don't have a cell phone? No problem. AT&T will also have tethered phones boys and adults can use to call home for free.

Can't go 10 days without checking your e-mail? Wi-Fi hotspots will support your smartphone or laptop computer, and a computer bank will be available for adult leaders to use in 10-minute blocks of time.

Advancement News

When the BSA was founded in 1910, boys weren’t into video games, scuba diving, or robotics. But as we enter our second century, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts will be able to earn awards in these topics, thanks to a new focus on change and innovation

New for Cub Scouts

Video Games is one of 13 new belt loops and pins in the Cub Scout Academics and Sports program. It’s been more than 10 years since the program expanded, so volunteers and Cub Scouts from around the country have been waiting for this change. In late January, our Scout shop on North Park Dr. in Meridian will have the new edition of the Cub Scout Academics and Sports Program Guide available, which will include these additions:

Academics Subjects:

• Disabilities Awareness
• Family Travel
• Good Manners
• Nutrition
• Pet Care
• Photography
• Reading and Writing
• Video Games

Sports:

• Hiking
• Hockey
• Horseback Riding
• Kickball
• Skateboarding

Requirements for the new awards will mirror those for the existing belt loops and pins. Besides the addition of the new awards, the Cub Scout Academics and Sports program remains the same.

New for Boy Scouts

Scuba Diving is the first new Boy Scout merit badge in three years; it will become available in December. Attached is a brochure about the badge that you can share with your Scouts, parents and adult volunteers.  Four other new merit badges will appear over the course of the coming year.

Popcorn Sales a Huge Success!

Nearly 600 scouts filled at least one complete form in this year’s popcorn sale, a 50% increase over last year. The council sale was nearly $850,000 up from $713,000 last year. Translated that means that the 120 units that participated in this year’s sale will each share in the $340,000 on unit profits, bonus commissions and prizes.

Bow and mallows have been ordered for all the scouts who qualified by selling to at least 30 different individuals and should be available for units to pick up in the next 2 weeks. Details and confirmation on the “Day at the Saints Training Facility” cannot be completed until their season is completed—(hopefully after the Super Bowl!). Qualifying scouts will be notified by mail when those final details are confirmed. For units that are unable to pick up their bow and mallows for their scouts before then, they will be available to be picked up at the Saints Day.

SAVE THE DATE!

Council Camporall To Be Held March 26-28
For All Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturers
Celebrate the 100th Anniversary Together!

Units are encouraged to make plans now to join in our 100th Anniversary Council Camporall, Celebrating the Adventure, Continuing the Journey March 26-28 at Camp V-Bar, Salmen Scout Reservation. Cost is $15 per person. Activities featured include specific programs for cubs, webelos, Boy Scouts, and Venturers; a Saturday Night Spectacular show, and much more. A leader guide will be coming out this month with all of the latest information as well as registration forms. We’ll see you there!!

Ask the Expert: The BSA’s ‘active’ requirement

So when one of you comes to us with a question about Scouting policy, we know how to find the answer.

“Many troops have adopted a policy that interprets the ‘active’ requirement as attending a specific minimum percentage of meetings and outings. This seems to be in contradiction to the BSA policy forbidding adding or subtracting from requirements. Are troops permitted to add these percentages to requirements?”

The short answer: No. For the official reasoning, we went to Bill Evans, team leader of youth development for the BSA. Here’s what Bill told us:

“Good question.  As the writer states, it is true and stated several times in the Advancement Policies and Procedures Guide that neither, councils, districts, nor units may add to, modify, or delete BSA advancement policies. This rule is highlighted, bold, and in a box so people won’t miss it.  If a unit does modify the active requirement as the writer suggests, it could come back to haunt them if the youth appeals a negative decision based on that modification.  The national advancement taskforce just revisited the definition of ‘active’ and, after great discussion, decided to leave it as it is.  Units may not add a percentage of meetings to attend.”

Catholic Committee On Scouting

The Footsteps of American Saints

The Footsteps of American Saints program is a series of religious activities that encourages youth to learn about several individuals who have shaped the landscape of Catholicism in America. The goal is to share the lives of several Blessed and Saints so that the youth might relate to what these people have done and maybe look to these individuals as role models.

10 saint activities will be available at any one time…20 saint activities exist in all. A patch with the saint’s likeness is available for each activity.

Finance:

November and December have been quite active in fundraising. In this short time span over $331,000 was raised in five special events and the Board Friends of Scouting Kickoff. We are finishing 2009 strong and have got a significant jump start on 2010.

·                     November 5th the 3rd annual “Fishing for Scouts” tournament was held at Lafitte Sea Way Marina. Ricky Burke and his team from Atmos raised over $12,000 which is by far the most ever for the tournament. The two Eagle Sponsors Atmos and Capital One will appear on the Fishing Show “Between the Banks”. The host of “Between the Banks” Bob Gourgeos is an Eagle Scout from Thibodaux. Plans are currently underway for next year’s tournament. Early discussions have been to move the event to the summer and have it at Grand Isle. We feel more fish will be caught and there will be increased participation. Anglers can visit the island for the entire weekend with their families. There are many lodging choices. Both the State Park and Elmer’s Island offer great opportunities to those who may bring young people fishing or to those who do not have a boat available. Beach fishing is great in both areas. Offshore divisions could also be added to the event.

·                     November 12th the 1st annual Dodge Ball tournament was held at Riverside Hilton in New Orleans. Will Place and his committee raised over $10,000 anchored by a $5,000 sponsorship by the U.S. Army. Round robin matches were held in the morning and elimination rounds were held in the afternoon. Smoothie King won the $1,000 first prize and took home the Golden Baller Trophy. The owner of Smoothie King also wants to get involved with the Scout Expo. This was a very fun, fast paced event and all who participated want to do it again.

·                     November 30th the Bayou Golf Classic was scheduled for Ellendale Country Club in Houma. Robbie Naquin of Capital One Bank in Houma was the Chairman raising over $12,000. Thibodaux Regional Medical Center was the title sponsor once again committing to $5,000. The morning started out fine and everything was ready to go for the 10:00 shotgun start. It started raining hard at 9:50 and did not stop the entire day.  Ellendale Country Club has provided rain checks to all of the foursomes.

·                     On December 3rd the Distinguished Citizen Award Dinner was held at Louisiana ArtWorks honoring Bill Oliver. Dennis Lauscha lead a volunteer host committee which raised over $165,000. This was a very special evening starting with a reception. Music from members of the Buck Town All Stars started the event off in grand fashion.  Over 330 guests were in attendance showing their admiration and respect for Bill. Eric Paulsen was the M.C. for the program which was opened up by a Scout Color Guard and an invocation by Dr. WLT Littleton. There were several board members on the program including Dennis, John Peper, Ken Pickering, Jason Krall and Herschel Abbott. Christy Oliver Reeves, Bill’s Daughter also gave a heartfelt testimony.   Dennis Lauscha presented the Award to Bill who took the opportunity to present his wife Caroline with a beautiful bouquet of a dozen roses. John Cabeza closed the evening with some remarks about Scouting in Southeast Louisiana and about Bill Oliver.

·                     On December 4th Chitimacha and Delta Districts held the “Christmas Comes Early” Auction and Gala at the Mardi Gras Museum in Kenner. Traci and Greg Espenan chaired a very nice evening. There were several great donated items auctioned. Packs, troops and Venture crews supplied great baskets full of great items for the event.   All of the food and beverage was donated by local restaurants and vendors. Alan Smason provided music for the evening. This is a very nice event which has great potential for growth. Greg and Traci have agreed to chair again next year. Over $7,000 was raised.

·                     December 10th John and Ann Peper opened their home for the annual Christmas Party and Board Friends of Scouting Kickoff. It was a very enjoyable evening in a wonderful home. For the 2010 Board Campaign $110,000 was raised. Also an additional $15,000 was committed to special events, camperships and the council Banquet.

Youth Protection Training

Scouting is all about helping young people lead productive, value driven lives. However, the most important t, hing we do as adult leaders is not to teach them to tie a knot or shoot a bow and arrow. The most important thing we do is making sure while they are doing scouting they remain safe. Safe from injury, safe from serious accident, and yes safe from others who presence we need to protect our children from. Scouting for many years as offered Youth Protection Training to all adult leaders as well as parents and others who find themselves in leadership roles with these precious young people. A new version of Youth Protection Training is available on line at our Council website ( www.bsa-selacouncil.org ) and can be found by going to the training tab and creating a MyScouting account. If you have never completed the training, make a commitment to get in completed this month. If it’s been over a year since you last took the training, it might be well to go through it a, gain as a refresher. While completing of the course should automatically, update your training record, some web browsers are not as compatible with the training as others. We recommend that whenever you complete an online training course that you shoot an email to sela@bsamail.org, indicating your name, unit, number and the, course that you completed so we can make sure your training record is up to date.

Scoutmasters,

Merit Badge Weekend is tentatively scheduled for March 19-21. The 100th Anniversary Camporall is scheduled for the following weekend.

The Camporall is a council-wide event and it is anticipated that many Packs, Troops, and Crews will be attending. Hopefully, many of our troops will attend the camporall. We see two potential problems with holding Merit Badge weekend the weekend prior to the camporall. First, many troops will not want to camp 2 consecutive weekends and will therefore have to choose between the two. Also, there will be a lot of activity setting up for the camporall the weekend prior to the event.

We are asking for your input regarding the plan for Merit Badge weekend. We would like to offer either a one-day event on Saturday, March 20th in Metairie or a weekend event April 9-11 at Camp V Bar. Please let us know which you would prefer.

We need to wrap up the decision process by the Jan. 7th roundtable. Please give your feedback to Tony Faucheaux at ajfiiimd@bellsouth.net

We would like to thank Ricky Burke and Dr. Tony Faucheaux for their service the past few years and look forward to our new Key 4 leaders moving the Pelican District forward.

Thank you to all of the units that participated in a very successful 2009 Popcorn sale! Your efforts are greatly appreciated.

THE FAMILY FUN OF SCOUTING

ENTHUSIASM, COMMITMENT, GREAT REWARDS

MAKE IT SO!

ScoutParents is part of Scouting’s National Parenting Imitative.  It is specially designed for parents, guardians, grandparents, extended family and all those who are involved with our Scouts and all other interested adults who want to learn about Scouting. It is the ideal introduction for those new to Scouting.

ScoutParents is the vision of lifelong Scouter Gerald I. Lawhorn, from Georgia. On the website, it says that Gerald believes “all parents of Scouts should be asked to volunteer and make it known that they desire to participate, help, and enjoy Scouting with their child. Those that choose to will be the ones who become ScoutParents or other volunteers.” One of Gerald’s quotes: “Scouts of “drop off” parents generally drop out!”

The intent of the initiative is to provide parents with information and tools to help them understand their importance in becoming more involved with their Scouts. In turn, we hope that Scouts will stay with the program longer and have a better experience, hopefully working their way to the Eagle Scout rank.

Look at the website and think of some new ways to involve the parents of your Scouts in your unit activities and include them in your planning for future events.
