Experience Scouting like never before with Adventure Base 100! Created specifically for the 100th Anniversary Celebration, Adventure Base 100 is traveling the country to give people an exciting, hands-on view of the history and future of the Boy Scouts of America.
This 10,000 square foot campus features immersive Scouting experiences including a ropes course and zip line, interactive digital exhibits, a multi-sensory IMAX-like dome, and more! It will also house a traveling museum that will showcase real artifacts from the National Scouting Museum in Irving, Tex.
Starting at the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, Calif. in January, and ending at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York in November, this magnificent traveling exhibit will stop at key events and locations in more than 40 cities.
100th Anniversary Hall of Leadership
The 100th Anniversary National Hall of Leadership is an opportunity for anyone to recognize outstanding leadership by a Scout, registered leader, or Scouting volunteer who made a significant difference in the life of another by the extraordinary service they have given and the Scouting virtues they have modeled.
The value and relevancy of Scouting comes to life in leadership demonstrated by Scouts and Scouters. Nominations to the National Hall of Leadership are real-life stories from individuals in our council who have been the recipients of extraordinary examples of leadership by our Scouts and Scouters.
To nominate an individual, please go to the following link, and enter your nomination on-line: http://ww2.scouting.org/100years/100years/NationalHallofLeadership.aspx
Virtually anyone associated with Scouting has met someone special who has inspired them or helped them to be a better leader, parent, student, or person by virtue of having met or worked with them in Scouting. Please take the time to nominate the person who has most inspired you in Scouting by their example. Nominees must be living and have to have been registered in Scouting for at least one year, but do not necessarily have to be currently registered.
Generations Connection
Your pictures are wanted!
So many of us have family histories of multi-generational scouting. The council would like to highlight as many as possible. From October 1st through December 31st of this year one of our new display cabinets will be dedicated to groupings of pictures that show family scouting through 2 or more generations. The pictures can be one with multi-generations, or can be a grouping of 2-5 pictures showing scouting in your family through the generations. All pictures should be no larger that 8x10 and should be labeled on the front as to the family and the years the scouts or Scouters were in scouting. On the back please label your contact information so we can be sure the pictures al get back to their rightful owners when we change out the cabinet in January. We would love to fill the cabinet with yours and others family scouting histories in scouting.
While you are at it, be sure to find your way to the 100th anniversary website where you can download the Scouting generational tree and submit a story about how scouting has been an important part of your family. After submitting your story, the website will produce a certificate confirming your family as a generational scouting family. For families that you or your son is the first scouting member, the same website will produce a certificate announcing you/he as a founding member of the future scouting generational family.

Webelos & Boy Scouts!
Our travel plans for the 2010 National Scout Jamboree
We currently only have 6 slots available for our Jamboree contingent
Southeast Louisiana Council Jamboree Information Sheet
A National Scout Jamboree happens once every four years and the next one is in 2010! A Jamboree is ten days of non-stop fun, activity and unique experiences that will provide opportunities for Scouts to be challenged and enriched. The Jamboree experience has something for everyone: Activity centers containing climbing, repelling, BMX and shooting sports; Aquatic activities like sailing, canoeing, fishing, snorkeling and SCUBA diving; A Merit Badge Midway where nearly every BSA Merit Badge is represented; and many other things you will find no where else.
The Southeast Louisiana Council will be sending 72 Scouts and 8 leaders to Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia, the site of the 2010 National Scout Jamboree that will take place from July 26 to August 4, 2010. But our trip is more than just the jamboree!! We plan to leave Monday July 19th and travel to Knoxville Tennessee for overnight stop. Then we will travel on Tuesday July 20th. Arrive in Cheltenham Maryland at American Legion Youth Camp. On Wednesday July 21st we will tour Washington DC and on Thursday July 22nd we will tour Philadelphia, PA. On Friday July 23rd we will spend the day at Busch Gardens, Williamsburg, VA. On Saturday July 24th we plan on touring Washington DC. On Sunday July 25th we will do an evening Tour of Washington DC.
On Monday July 26th through Wednesday August 4th we will be at the National Boy Scout Jamboree. We will be leaving on Wednesday August 4th and travel to Chattanooga TN for overnight stop. On Thursday August 5th we are planning on doing Whitewater rafting on Ocoee River. Finally on Friday August 6th we will depart Chattanooga and return to New Orleans.
The 2010 Jamboree contingent fee is budgeted to be $2,200. This fee will cover the Jamboree fee of $795, plus all transportation, tours, admission fees, meals lodging, and patrol and troop equipment, as well as insurance. Your fee also covers the training campouts before the jamboree. The only additional expenses will be your personal equipment, uniforms, and spending money. A monthly payment schedule will begin in fall of 2008.
Charter Renewals
The vast majority of Packs, Troops, Teams, Crews and Posts in our council have a renewal date of December 31, 2009. Your unit probably does as well. So what does that mean to you? Well first, if you have not received your charter renewal packet by the time you read this article—please contact your District Commissioner or District executive immediately. We printed the renewal packets in September and all should be in the hands of unit leadership by now.
The next step is to decide if you are going to renew your charter online or by paper. Online is a relatively easy method that allows you to take charge or what information is entered about your membership. Your commissioner can help you with the process no matter which method you use.
Next is to recognize the deadline to renew your charter is December 31st. After that date, your charter is lapsed and you should not hold any meetings or activities until your charter is renewed. Our accident and liability insurance that covers the leaders and youth is only valid for currently chartered units. While December 31st is the deadline, It is highly recommended that all charters are renewed between December 1st and 15th to allow us to review them and make sure that all signatures and notations are in place.
Please REMEMBER that the registration fee for all December renewals is $15 and an additional $1 for accident insurance for all adults and youth.
Be sure that all new applicants have a signed application attached to the charter renewal with the signature in the criminal background check form intact.
Lastly, be sure to review the Centennial Quality Unit form. In your packet we have placed one that allows you to both set your 2010 goals as well as to indicate your successes for 2009. The ultimate criteria for determining if your unit qualifies is that can you justify that your unit is a better unit than it was in 2008? Do you plan on getting better in 2010?
Renewing your charter “On-Time” is a requirement to be a centennial Quality Unit. Be sure that you do not miss the opportunity for your unit to qualify because you didn’t get your charter in on time!
Social Security Number Entry in Internet Rechartering
Change in Social Security Number Entry during Internet Rechartering Due to Privacy Concerns
This fall, in time for the next charter renewal cycle, all Social Security Number (SSN) entry fields and references will be removed from Internet Rechartering and will be replaced with the display of an informational text message as follows: “**Social Security Number is required and will be entered by your council from the adult application.”
The local council will assume the responsibility for entering SSNs for new adult leader applicants once the renewal has been submitted through Internet Rechartering, and the required paperwork has been received at the council office. The current Charter Renewal posting process in local councils does not allow an adult leader registration to be posted without a valid SSN, so this implementation will not compromise or change the current SSN requirement or validation.
Support documentation for Internet Rechartering will be revised so that the Help document and Tutorial will be changed to explain this change.
The following is a sample of where the new text message box will display in Internet Rechartering:

Whitney Young Award

The Awards will be presented at the Jones Walker Law Firm, 201 St. Charles, at a reception beginning at 6:00 PM. Individual tickets will be $100, with sponsorships and other opportunities available. Troops and Packs in Jefferson Parish
As part of the Generations connection program for the 100th Anniversary celebration, Families and units are encouraged to plant a centennial tree. Why not take that challenge one notch higher and adopt a greenway or portion of a roadway in your community?
As part of Jefferson Parish’s quality of life initiatives, the Parkways Department is asking scout units to join in planting trees and landscaping medians. Sponsorship categories include: commercial sponsors, service organizations, scout troops and garden clubs. Adoption programs can be adapted to suit anyone’s needs.
Parkway sponsors who excel in improving the landscape of their adopted sections of thoroughfares are recognized by a sign and are eligible to receive the coveted “Parkway Sponsor of the Year” award. Each year , a , bronzed garden statue is placed at the “Parkway Sponsor of the Year” location.
To promote an organization and help improve our quality of life, contact Beulah Oswald, Parkway Volunteer Coordinator, at 737-7583 or Kai Adams, Director of Jefferson Parish Parkways Department, at 349-5800.

Youth Protection Training
Scouting is all about helping young people lead productive, value driven lives. However, the most important t, hing we do as adult leaders is not to teach them to tie a knot or shoot a bow and arrow. The most important thing we do is making sure while they are doing scouting they remain safe. Safe from injury, safe from serious accident, and yes safe from others who presence we need to protect our children from. Scouting for many years as offered Youth Protection Training to all adult leaders as well as parents and others who find themselves in leadership roles with these precious young people. A new version of Youth Protection Training is available on line at our Council website ( www.bsa-selacouncil.org ) and can be found by going to the training tab and creating a MyScouting account. If you have never completed the training, make a commitment to get in completed this month. If it’s been over a year since you last took the training, it might be well to go through it a, gain as a refresher. While completing of the course should automatically, update your training record, some web browsers are not as compatible with the training as others. We recommend that whenever you complete an online training course that you shoot an email to sela@bsamail.org, indicating your name, unit, number and the, course that you completed so we can make sure your training record is up to date.
The Southeast Louisiana Council Memorial/Tribute Fund
This fund was established to enable contributors to remember or honor a Scout, family member,, volunteer, friend, or community leader. Contributions may be made for any amount as a lasting tribute or a living memorial to someone of their cho, osing. It can be for Eagle Scout recognition, anniversary, birth, birthday, retirement, Silver Beaver honoree or any special occasion.
The Memorial/Tribute Fund is intended to accommodate those who want to express in a most meaningful way their deepest feeling that may not be achieved by words alone. All gifts to the fund help provide support in delivery of a quality Scouting program in the Southeast Loui, siana Council.
Upon receipt of a contribution, the council will mail a card to the family or group in whose memory or honor the gift is made and send an acknowledgment to you. Download the Memorial Tribute form here.

District Executive: Juan Prado
For more information, please refer to District Website @ or www.bsa-selacouncil.org Left side tab for districts then click Chitimacha
CHITIMACHA IS A 2008 CENTENNIAL QUALITY DISTRICT!
By now you may have heard that beginning January 1, 2010 redistricting will occur in the Southeast Louisiana Council. This action is the result of the recommendations of the District Realignment Committee established as a result or the Council’s Long Range Plan and approved by the Executive Board in September.
Among several adjustments effective January 1, 2010 the West Bank of St James Parish will officially be part of the Bayou District, and a new district will be established comprised of St Charles Parish, St John Parish, and the east bank of Jefferson Parish (effectively pulling together the resources of most of the current Tchoupitoulas and Chitimacha Districts).
One of the first tasks will be to come up with a new name. We are looking for Scouts to suggest names for their new district. Please use the enclosed form to submit names for the new district no later than Monday, November 9, 2009. You can submit the names your Scouts have suggested by emailing the forms or just the names to Andrew Williams (anwillia@bsamail.org) or to Juan Prado (jprado@bsamail.org) or you can fax the form to (504) 889-1162. The names suggested will be reviewed by the Ad Hoc Merger Committee, and they will select the top five names for council executive board approval. Once the top five names have been approved each unit leader will receive an official ballot in the mail. Each unit will receive one vote for the name of the new district. The deadline for your ballot to be mailed to the office (or by fax) is Tuesday, December 1, 2009. The name of the new district will be unveiled at the Super Roundtable to be held Thursday, December 3, 2009.

SELA 2009 POWDER HORN
Southeast Louisiana Council’s first Venturing Powder Horn course was recently completed at Salmen Scout Reservation.
Promoted as the “First Forty-Eight”, over the span of two 3-day weekends, participants and staff experienced a one-of-a-kind resource course for adult leaders who want to bring more excitement and high adventure activities to their youths’ Scouting programs.
SCUBA in the pool, Caving-indoors, line dancing with the White Bird Native American Drum/Dance team, kayaking, shooting cannons/black powder with our Outdoor Living History Re-enactment Group, COPE, climbing/rappelling, LNT, backcountry cooking, an “Emergency in the Woods”, New Zealand “Poi” dancing, planting marsh grasses for conservation, geocaching, sailing on the lake, shooting/archery, invasive species detection, branding, fly fishing, lifesaving/SS/SA, and an “Overnight Experience” were some of the many presentations / hands-on experiences for the participants over the 6 days.
This was the first Powder Horn held in our Southeast Louisiana Council, but it will by no means be the last! Excitement from participants and staff who have completed the 2 weekends is contagious, and we are already beginning to plan our next course.
Thank you to all of the volunteers who do so much for the youth of our district and have a happy and safe Thanksgiving!

ScoutParents is part of Scouting’s National Parenting Imitative. It is specially designed for parents, guardians, grandparents, extended family and all those who are involved with our Scouts and all other interested adults who want to learn about Scouting. It is the ideal introduction for those new to Scouting.
ScoutParents is the vision of lifelong Scouter Gerald I. Lawhorn, from Georgia. On the website, it says that Gerald believes “all parents of Scouts should be asked to volunteer and make it known that they desire to participate, help, and enjoy Scouting with their child. Those that choose to will be the ones who become ScoutParents or other volunteers.” One of Gerald’s quotes: “Scouts of “drop off” parents generally drop out!”
The intent of the initiative is to provide parents with information and tools to help them understand their importance in becoming more involved with their Scouts. In turn, we hope that Scouts will stay with the program longer and have a better experience, hopefully working their way to the Eagle Scout rank.
Look at the website and think of some new ways to involve the parents of your Scouts in your unit activities and include them in your planning for future events.
